Simulacrum influence

During the process of research into simulacrum, I found a video of note. This video, although having various comedic and entertainment based elements, effectively demonstrates some of the key codes and conventions of 'A Trent Reznor Song' and how this transcends to the audience.

The video can be found here:

I have picked out some elements I thought pertinent to my research below.

Angst
Shown above is an effective still which reinforces the not only the angst ridden portrayal of Reznor but also the black and white (grey scale) filter which connotes Gothic styles and emotional lyricism. The notion of a black and white filter is something that I am most certainly looking to utilize in order to achieve an emotional and artistic impact upon my target audience. This still also takes credit from 'We're In This Together' which can be found here:

Band shot
This particular frame demonstrates the band set up (common in NIN music video productions). This frame is also an outstanding demonstration of Mise-En-Scene, with Reznor and co being dressed in all black and sporting long Gothic style hair.  This is a style I am aiming to re-create in my production as it is representative and highly conventional of the genre as a whole as well as NIN. This particular still takes direct inspiration from Reznor's 2005 single 'The Hand That Feeds' which can be found here:

All in all, this video was worth a mention due to it's acurate, (all be it humourous delivery) through the emulation and simulacrum of Reznor, as well as the embrace of genre conventions (Industrial).

  1. Useful for exam work - specific postmodern (media language/genre/representation) concept linked in to web 2.0. Needs to be highlighted in Q4 Techs too.
