Vodcast #3- My Pitch and Q&A session

  1. Hi Joseph, Mr Burrowes here. First up – why the low resolution for your videos?! They’re all at 360 or 480p!
Picking a track with no existing video is a good idea – if its good enough it could attract serious (‘real world’) views online. You can also tap into the huge online fanbase to get audience feedback, and to help define your target audience more precisely, as well as broadly get your teeth into using social media as a central tool.
You would clearly need to get considerable practice in low light conditions in particular to check your ideas will work!
You also say you’ll be the lead – this is a SERIOUS issue with marks, as you won’t be responsible for cinematography; you really do need to try and pair up for that to be a realistic choice.
Whether you or someone else, I’d want to hear MUCH more detail about the costume and look – vital for this artist and fanbase (any genre really!).
The Q was asked about dancing – you didn’t fully address that! Likewise with make-up, clearly a key component.
I was left a little unclear on the narrative too, that needs some clarifying. Are you reflecting the lyrics (if so, to what extent/how)?
Some past student videos that might give you further inspiration: look in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXGWc8rFIDE and find the Nine Inch Nails video especially, but also the Faithless video (the final cut, not the various exercises). The Joy Division video too…
It can be clichĂ©d, but B+W may be an option (and/or some colour correction – for example, B+W where red is also featured at points). No mention of green screen (that I noticed), but this is always a good idea to include, gives you so many options in editing. No mention of lipsynching/performance(?) – a pure narrative video is risky, performance again gives you huge options in editing.
Different genre, but Metallica’s One and Enter Sandman might be worth looking at; for possible (weird) costume/character ideas, the Pixies’ recent videos*; for generally postmodern and countertypical touches, Rammstein; for archetypes, Gary Numan, Sisters of Mercy, maybe the Mission (goth and industrial share considerable characteristics). The intense editing style of many Megadeth and Sepultura videos might also be a useful reference point. I haven’t heard the track though – that should be prominent on your blog!

Interesting, but needs more development to be fully convincing!

  2. At this stage the audience made no mention of female; secondary was just older males.
